Nancy started baking cookies when she was teaching algebra and geometry to English as a Second Language students at Irvin High School in El Paso, Texas. She and another colleague started the district’s first Saturday school at the high school level targeting that student population. The cookies were a gift from Nancy’s culture and had a tendency to relax the students so they could concentrate better. The cookies soon turned into awards for academic achievement (Nancy created the first Irvin rocket decorated cookie) and then into prizes for games in the classroom. Her husband at the time realized the quality of the cookie and sold her first oatmeal raisin cookie to a coffee shop (which was in the exact same space as Sharp Cookie is today). He then gave the business the name “Sharp Cookie.” The shop opened in the fall of 2007 as a workshop with cookies only to order. The husband is no longer in the picture but the business continues to grow and thrive. It’s amazing what you can do with just a cookie!
